Background of the Study

Employer support for maternal health is crucial in ensuring safe pregnancies and reducing maternal and neonatal complications. Workplace policies such as paid maternity leave, breastfeeding support, and access to healthcare services contribute to maternal and infant well-being (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2024). However, many workplaces fail to implement adequate maternal health initiatives, particularly in low-resource settings.

In Taraba State, working mothers face multiple challenges, including lack of maternity benefits, inflexible work schedules, and limited workplace healthcare support. Many women continue working under strenuous conditions, which may increase the risk of pregnancy-related complications. While some employers provide maternity leave and healthcare support, the extent of these benefits varies across industries.

This study seeks to assess the level of employer support for maternal health initiatives in Taraba State, identifying gaps and recommending improvements to enhance maternal health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Many employers in Taraba State do not provide adequate maternal health support, leaving pregnant and nursing mothers vulnerable to health risks. The absence of maternity-friendly workplace policies can lead to stress, pregnancy complications, and reduced breastfeeding rates. Understanding employer support levels is crucial for improving maternal health policies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate employer support for maternal health initiatives in Taraba State.

  2. To identify workplace challenges faced by pregnant and nursing mothers.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving employer-provided maternal health benefits.

Research Hypotheses

  1. Limited employer support negatively impacts maternal and infant health.

  2. Maternity-friendly workplace policies improve pregnancy outcomes.

  3. Workplace breastfeeding support increases exclusive breastfeeding rates.
